It is structured into 21 concrete measures centered around 7 pillars: Health, Nature, Carbon, Innovation, Local engagement, Employment and Dialogue. • Ensure healthy interiors: use eco-labeled products, including cleaning products, wall paint and floor coverings. • Reduce water and energy use • Waste recycling • Protect biodiversity: Biodiversity is essential to our planet’s equilibrium. In spite of this, plant and animal species disappear ever year. • Plant trees as part of a global reforestation project supported by the United Nations: guests have the option of reusing their towels. For 5 towels reused, 1 tree is planted. Ultrafilter Scandinavia was founded in 2010 by Per Johnsen and Dean Kronsbein, and today numbers 5 employees and 1 agent (in Sweden). We carry stock in Denmark, and distribute all our products from here to the. • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions: each hotel monitor its own carbon footprint. • Increase the use of renewable energy: biomass, geothermal, solar panel, etc. • Eco-friendly products: ibis, Suite Novotel and Novotel use EU Ecolabel bath amenities. • Local engagement: support host communities economic development and the natural ecosystems in which hotels operate. • Support responsible purchasing practices: by opting for intensive, rational, organic, fair trade and other responsible production methods. • Protect ecosystems: while ecosystems sustain the life and diversity of plant and animal species, they are too often threatened by human activities. The hotel industry is concerned and can take action by managing the origin and nature of the biological resources they use as well as this discharges they release into the ecosystem. • Share sustainable commitments with suppliers and integrate sustainable development criteria into all phases, from specifications to specific clauses integrated into supplier certification contracts. Great hotel to stop en route to the South of France. Hotel is across split levels with no lifts. Restaurant is good with a reasonably priced fixed menu and children's menu available. Drinks are expensive. Swimming pool is refreshing and ideal for the kids to swim off their energy after a day in the car. Unfortunately we were double charged for our restaurant food, though after a few emails with reception, we received a refund. The wifi is free and there is a children's activity area with an interactive games table. Staff could do with being happier and friendlier. Rooms were clean and spacious. Single beds were a little narrow. Bar prices high €7 for Heineken, €8 for a Bacardi. Did not use the restaurant. A useful tip is to go to nearby Chinese restaurant. All you can eat buffet for €15 per head. €3 for lager. There is also a McDonald's nearby. Must be a demand due to the high prices on the hotel restaurants. Breakfast was disappointing. Bacon cold and greasy even though they had just put some 'fresh' out from the kitchen. Ended up with cornflakes and a cup of tea.

What causes molluscum contagiosum? It is caused by a virus which can be passed on by skin-to-skin contact. You can also be infected by touching things that have been contaminated by the virus. For example, by sharing towels, flannels or soft toys that have been used by someone who has molluscum contagiosum. Once one area of skin is affected the rash can spread to other areas of your skin. However, most people are resistant (immune) to this virus. Therefore, most of those who come into contact with affected people do not develop molluscum contagiosum. In adults sometimes the virus is passed on during the close skin-to-skin contact of having sex. If it is passed on whilst having sex then the first mollusca to appear tend to be on the skin of the lower tummy (abdomen) and around the penis, vagina or back passage (anus). If this occurs then you should consider being checked out for other sexually transmitted infections. You can attend a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic for tests and do not need a referral from your GP. How does molluscum contagiosum develop? The small lumps (mollusca) on the skin usually develop 2-8 weeks after you become infected with the virus. Molluscum In Adults. Molluscum contagiosum is rarer in adults than in children, so it is likely that immunity develops where there are no obvious lesions. Though most common in children, molluscum contagiosum can affect adults as well — particularly those with weakened immune systems. In adults with an otherwise normal immune system, molluscum contagiosum involving the genitals is considered a sexually transmitted infection. Typically, each lump (molluscum) lasts a few weeks or months, crusts over and then goes. However, new ones tend to appear as old ones are going, as the virus spreads to other areas of skin. Therefore, crops of mollusca may appear to come and go for several months. It commonly takes 12-18 months before the last of the mollusca goes completely. Occasionally, the condition lasts longer than two years - sometimes as long as five years. For some people, the main concern is that the mollusca can look unsightly. Most children are not bothered by it. Is molluscum contagiosum serious? The small lumps (mollusca) on the skin are not usually itchy, painful, or serious. A scar is not usually left when they go but sometimes a tiny dent or mark remains. In a few people the skin looks lighter in the places where mollusca have been. Occasionally, the skin next to a lump (molluscum) becomes infected with germs (bacteria). There is no need for adults to keep away from gyms or other people. To reduce the chance of passing it on to others, it is sensible not to share towels, clothes, soft toys, or bathwater if you have molluscum contagiosum. Also, try to avoid. An introduction to molluscum contagiosum, a skin condition causing white raised bumps. We look at the symptoms, causes, treatment, and risk factors. Molluscum contagiosum can affect anyone of any age. It is most common in children and mostly happens in children aged 1-4 years. However, it can also (much less commonly) affect adults. People whose immune systems are not working as well as usual are more likely to get it. Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus that lives in the outer layer of your skin. You can get it during sexual contact, and it's easily spread through non-sexual touching and by sharing clothes and towels, too. Both kids and adults can get molluscum contagiosum. Molluscum contagiosum causes small, firm bumps. Molluscum contagiosum is an infection caused by a poxvirus (molluscum contagiosum virus). The result of the infection is usually a benign. In most people. Molluscum contagiosum is a. Molluscum can spread to. Patients with eczema may be more severely affected by molluscum. Signs and Symptoms. Molluscum contagiosum is a common wart-like viral skin infection. For most children, the rash is no big deal and goes away on its own over time. This can be treated with. Rarely, a molluscum on an eyelid causes eye inflammation. (See a doctor if any eye symptoms develop related to a molluscum.) After an episode of molluscum contagiosum has cleared away, you will normally be immune to the virus and further episodes only occur rarely. If you develop a very large number of mollusca (hundreds) or the mollusca are larger than normal, it could be a marker of an underlying problem with your immune system. This may need specialised assessment. Can infection with molluscum contagiosum be prevented? The chance of passing on the molluscum contagiosum virus to others is small, and it is not serious anyway. Therefore, there is no need to keep children with molluscum contagiosum off school, or away from swimming pools, etc. There is no need for adults to keep away from gyms or other people. To reduce the chance of passing it on to others, it is sensible not to share towels, clothes, soft toys, or bathwater if you have molluscum contagiosum. Also, try to avoid skin-to-skin contact with other people (for example, by covering affected areas with clothing). For adults who have the small lumps (mollusca) on the skin, a condom should be used during sex. This will not completely stop skin-to-skin spread but will reduce the chance of passing it on considerably. Try not to scratch the mollusca, as this may increase the risk of spreading the rash to other areas of the skin. Molluscum contagiosum can be passed on to other people (is contagious) until the last lump (molluscum) has gone. What is the treatment for molluscum contagiosum? It is usually best not to treat, particularly in children This is because: • The small lumps (mollusca) on the skin will usually go away without treatment within 12-18 months. Having the rash does not limit your activities such as going to school, sports, swimming, etc. • Many of the treatments can be painful (such as liquid nitrogen). • Some treatments have a risk of burning the surrounding skin. • All treatments have a small risk of scarring the skin. Scarring rarely occurs if the mollusca are left to go away on their own. • There is no really good evidence that any treatment makes a big difference to how long the mollusca last. Treatment options if needed • There is no convincing evidence yet that any one treatment works best. • Sometimes treatment is wanted, if the lesions are particularly unsightly or troublesome, or if they are spreading very widely. You should discuss this with your GP. • Sometimes mollusca are frozen with. • Creams and lotions may be used. As previously stated, so far doctors are not sure which is the best one, or even if some of them have any effect at all. Options used include: • Benzoyl peroxide. • Hydrogen peroxide. • Potassium hydroxide. • Iodine preparations. (Prescribed occasionally by skin specialists particularly in people who have problems with their immune system.) • Pulsed dye laser therapy. (Blasting the mollusca with special laser beams. Occasionally used by skin specialists.) • If the skin around the mollusca becomes itchy or infected, your GP can prescribe creams for this. Overview Molluscum contagiosum is a common painless and usually harmless viral infection of the skin. Although it is painless and usually goes away after several months, some cases can last a few years. Molluscum can spread to surrounding skin by scratching or rubbing and can spread to others by skin-to-skin contact or handling contaminated objects such as towels, toys, and clothing. Poor hygiene and warm, moist climates encourage the spread of molluscum. Use of public or school swimming pools is associated with childhood infections. Who's at risk? Adults and teens are more often infected by molluscum through sexual contact and tend to have genital lesions. Children from age 1–5 are most commonly affected with lesions appearing on the face, neck, arms, armpits, and hands (but usually not the palms). Patients with eczema may be more severely affected by molluscum. Signs and Symptoms In adults, the genital, stomach, buttock, and inner thigh areas are more often affected as intimate contact with another is the typical source of infection. Men are more often affected than women. Adults with defective immune systems (such as with HIV) may have severe, extensive infection. One or more small (1–5 mm) pink, white, or skin-colored, smooth, dome-shaped bumps, often with a tiny dot or depression in the center, occur in clusters and sometimes in a straight line from scratching and self-inoculation. In patients with a defective immune system, bumps can be larger than a nickel. • Mild – under 10 spots • Moderate – 10–50 spots • Severe – over 50 spots Self-Care Guidelines Treatment in mild infections is often not required, as molluscum infections goes away on their own. Care should be taken to not scratch or shave the areas. Keep the area covered to avoid transmission of the virus, and avoid sharing clothing, towels, and beds with others. Over-the-counter medications used to treat warts (with salicylic acid) may be helpful in removing the bumps, although these treatments can also be irritating. When to Seek Medical Care When there is a moderate or severe infection and there is a concern of spread or concern about appearance, seek medical care. Treatments Your Physician May Prescribe • Removal with freezing (cryosurgery), scraping (curettage), burning (electrocautery), or a laser • Application of chemicals (a strong acid or alkali) or Cantharone (an extract from a blister beetle) • Prescription of a cream with either tretinoin (derived from vitamin A) or imiquimod (a prescription product also used to treat warts, another type of viral infection) Trusted Links References Bolognia, Jean L., ed. Differential diagnostic clues Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and reactive attachment disorder (RAD) share many similar traits, but have different aetiology and prognosis, and should therefore be understood and treated differently. The literature on the topic is, however, sparse. Based on an extensive litterature search, this paper describes similarities and differences in behavioural markers between the two disorders. Diagnostic instruments may not discriminate between the conditions. Disordered social behaviour, information about assumed pathogenic care, cognitive problems, expressive language problems, stereotypes, difficulties in emotional regulation and problems with joint attention should not be considered as dependable differential diagnostic clues. The two conditions may best be separated on basis of underlying intact social ability as well as rapid and comprehensive recovery as seen in RAD (given that satisfying care conditions are established); and deviance in pragmatic language, restricted interests and theory-of-mind problems in ASD. Attachement in foster care: a treatment approach Attachement issues in foster care are examined with special focus on preschool children. Children in foster care are at risk for psychological problems, due to their experiences with adverse life conditions. Attachement theory can give useful contributions to understanding developmental processes for foster children, where secure attachement is acknowledged as a protective factor. However, research indicates that there can be difficulties for children who are placed in foster care after 12–18 months of age, to form secure attachements. Their previous attachement experiences have a strong impact in forming new relationships. In many cases there is a need for interventions that directly target the forming of attachements in foster care. Research concerning treatment approaches is outlined in the article. A lack of oxytocin could be the reason why so many of us are socially awkward when hanging with friends (in my case, I must not have any). As for what it does to your chances of meeting a guy there I go again, I'm all verklempt! The study deets As part of the study, participants watched a video of their own face morphing into an unfamiliar one, and vice versa. Jul 10, 2015. I just saw a question on yahoo answers asking women if they would date a guy who is 'nerdy and socially awkward.' Here are two of the answers: 'Nerdy and socially. Dating is a stage of romantic relationships in humans whereby two people meet socially, possibly as friends or with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability. Dating Tips for Socially Awkward Guys! We know, we know, we're slackers! John and Lisa finally respond to some viewer mail. The buzzfeed community what you are 15 dating problems only awkward. However you understand. Anyway, dating tips, the post for the root of us end up on that normal people developed in popular culture. Have my awkwardness. Wimpiness may be very self conscious of your date with some type of the creepy messages. Hey Jen, It’s great that you have these kinds of friends. Few people, socially awkward or not, can say they have friends for life. The risk though is that if you. Posts about Captain Awkward’s Dating Guide for Geeks written by JenniferP — Captain Awkward Advice. I figured he was just being kind of socially. Those who'd been given oxytocin in the form of nasal spray identified and accepted the new face more quickly when it appeared. Also, when they weren't given the spray, they rated their own face as more pleasing, but after a good ol' hormone boost, the attractiveness between the familiar and unfamiliar faces evened out (bow chicka wow wow!). The flip side of the coin Obviously, there's still a lot of research that needs to be done — another discovered that oxytocin has a dark side (dun dun duuun!). Scientists at Northwestern found that the hormone strengthens social memory in a specific part of the brain, so depending on how bad the experience was, it could actually make your social awkwardness worse. (When I start feeling awkward around my cat, then I know I'm in trouble.) What does this all mean? Now that they know both sides of the oxytocin coin, I'm sure it won't be long before they fully define the other factors that play a role — like your baseline anxiety level and other hormone levels — in order to create a successful treatment for social anxiety. The success of this potential breakthrough is really more to do with the action we take ourselves — we can't expect oxytocin to do all the work for us. Being socially awkward can feel like a complete nightmare, creepy funhouse mirrors and all, but a hormone fix can only take us so far. It can't charm a cute guy on our behalf or go out on a date for us. It can't help us through the Shakespearean tragedy we turn rejection into either. That's all on us which reminds me, I should really stock up on clinical strength deodorant. We already know avoiding awkwardness just makes things worse — you can only take up crocheting for so long. Until we have our big girl pants on though, it'd be nice to have a nasal spray wingwoman to help us through the initial stress of socializing so we can build some really fab relationships. We'll be waiting to hear from you scientists! We'll be the ones in the dark corner, fake texting someone while periodically staring at the floor. Throw us a bone, will you? More ways to nix awkwardness stat. Are you single and considering using an online dating site to meet someone? Are you already using dating sites, yet you can't find anyone to date you? Perhaps you've made it to the first date, but you can't seem to get anyone to date you again. My friend, you might just be a little socially awkward and you need some help! Just because you are a nerd, a dork, or lack some basic social skills doesn't mean you are undateable. There are plenty of socially awkward folks out there just like you that would like to meet that special someone. You just need some pointers on how to appeal to other online daters. The first step in online dating success is creating the best profile possible. First of all, try to think of a fun screen name when you first begin the profile process. Try to go with something that really reflects your personality, yet doesn't scare off potential daters. Complex mathematic equations might seem like a fun idea, but it is not an ideal screen name. Not only will it be difficult for most people to understand, it could also be difficult to remember. Go with something catchy and cute, and you will get more attention. When writing your profile, make sure to list a wide variety of interests. Also, make sure you are honest, too. Sure many women might like dating a smart bodybuilder that loves kittens and volunteers at the homeless shelter when he is not working late hours at the law office, but if none of that is true, what is to be gained? A relationship that starts with lies is not going to last. Instead, honestly list some of your interests. If your interests seem 'uncool' when listing them in your profile, why not try some new activities? Just because you've spent a better part of your life in the basement playing video games and Warhammer doesn't mean that is all you have to offer the world. You could still try bowling, golf, running, knitting, photography, swimming, etc. It doesn't mean you shouldn't list all your interests, including some of the not-so-cool activities, in your profile. I am merely suggesting most folks do a lot better when their interests seem very well rounded. It also helps if you make sure to put some real thought into your profile. Make sure to check your spelling and your grammar. You should also make sure to include at least a couple of paragraphs. When your profile is poorly written or very short, it makes others feel like you are not putting any effort into dating. You are a lot less likely to find a date that way. Books on Online Dating GET PAST THE PROFILE AND START DATING WITH THIS COMPLETE GUIDE TO FINDING ROMANCE ONLINEDating virtuoso and profile expert Lisa Hoehn has helped thousands of people meet, date. This comprehensive guide is packed with practical advice for women who want the most positive results with online dating. It will teach you how to optimize your online presence. Ever wonder what the real reasons are why women don't respond? Wonder if there really is a formula for success in online dating? In this book you’ll discover the secret “Game Ch. One of the most important aspects to online dating is posting photos. Even if you don't want to build a relationship based on appearances, photos can say a lot about a person. You need photos on your profile and you should at least post a few. When you don't post any photos, many members on the site will think you just have something to hide. Don't be that person! When posting photos, make sure to choose some pictures that are action shots. I am not talking about you leaping out of an airplane or anything, but a photo that shows you having fun makes others want to have fun with you. I understand when one is socially awkward your coolest photos might involve you sitting around playing video games or looking lonesome in front of a webcam. These photos are not going to work. You can maybe post one photo like that, but post some photos of yourself actually getting up and having fun. Photos at the beach, amusement parks, comic book conventions, dressed up like Harry Potter, or going to a Halloween haunted house are all good examples of activity photos. Sure dressing like Harry Potter or investigating comic books is taking a chance, but it shows your interests and will appeal to others who enjoy the same activities. Just make sure not to post 5 Star Trek convention photos and make sure not all of your photos have a Lord of the Rings theme. It is one thing to seem quirky; it is quite another to seem obsessed. Don't forget to smile in your photos. If you are glaring into the camera, you are going to scare dates away. When you smile, you will seem warm and friendly. In general, most folks want to go out with a person that can make them happy. If you look angry or sad, you are not going to attract the most well-adjusted people on the planet. If you are interested in dating miserable people, then by all means post sad or disturbing photos. Otherwise, smile for the camera! If someone approaches you online or you decide to approach someone, this can be very difficult for the socially awkward dater. Make sure not to scare your potential date away. Examples of inappropriate conversations are: • Talking obsessively about sci-fi topics, academic subjects, or video games. • Asking for sex immediately. • Telling someone you are a virgin immediately. • Discussing hanging out in a parent's basement too much. • Mentioning a fascination with serial killers or criminal activity. • Obsessing over an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend. • Insisting on meeting at someone's house instead of out in public. • Discussing body functions, such as farting, vomiting, sweating, etc. Aside from staying away from the topics listed above, it is important not to be too aggressive. Many online daters will send message after message without receiving a response. Not only is this creepy, it will probably make the other person block you. Another big no-no is obsessing over one person you'd like to date. On many dating sites, a member can see how often a person visits his or her page. If you are online stalking someone, that person is going to figure it out and not want to date you. If someone does reject you, don't make a big fuss over it. You can't talk someone out of not wanting to date you. The more you argue, the scarier you are going to seem to that person. It doesn't matter if you love pugs and he has two pet pugs. This is still just some dude your met online and having one thing in common does not make you soul mates. When a person rejects you, accept it and move on with your life. Once you do get through the initial communication process, it is time to actually go out on a date. Remember some basic rules for online dating: meet in a public place and plan a very basic first date. There really is no need to plan a day trip with someone you barely know. For that matter, it is probably not even a safe idea. The longer the date, the more pressure you put on yourself and your date. Simply meeting up at a coffee shop is a perfectly safe acceptable date. This way, if the date does not work out, no big deal. You spent a little time at a coffee shop, spent a little money, and now both of you can go your own way. If you are feeling bold and brave, you could opt to meet for dinner or lunch. I would only recommend that type of date if the two of you have been communicating for a while and not just online. If you feel comfortable on the phone with that person and you know you have great conversations, a dinner date can work out. If you barely know anything about the person sitting across from you, the date can be super awkward. While on the date, remember to be on your best behavior. Do you remember the list we discussed above? Those topics are still not permitted while on a date either. It is OK to let your inner nerd show some during the date, but don't overwhelm your date with too many boring details. It will make you appear obsessive. Since we are on the topic of inappropriate conversations, you should also avoid inappropriate behavior. Don't try to start hanging all over your date when you don't know each other that well. After a simple coffee date, going in for a kiss is probably too much. However, a hug is not that unreasonable. Insisting on making out with a date is super creepy, especially if your date looks disgusted if you bring it up. For that matter, as a general rule, if your date looks disgusted by anything you do, stop doing it! If you follow some of the basic rules, I believe you will be on your way to online dating success in no time. Just because you may have some personality quirks doesn't mean you are undateable. Plenty of nerds, freaks, weirdos, dorks, and uncool people find someone special. It is actually cool to be uncool right now, so embrace your inner dork and go out on some dates! Apparently they had a DJ coming in too, because he was setting up while we were drinking. The place still has it’s ambience and some of the trendy crowd still seems to be there, but it’s lost some of it’s lustre. I don’t know that this can be attributed just to Fhima’s though. For a while there St. Paul was the scene when all the places clustered around Lawson were new. They drew some of the Minneapolis crowd away and some of the 9 to 5’ers stuck around to check out the new places, but I think on the whole for the trendy scene St. Paul is played out. It seems with the new bars and clubs opening, once again Minneapolis is the late night destination.Pros + Still the same Fhima’sCons – *STILL* the same Fhima’s. I’ve never had full on dinner at View, but it’s the perfect happy hour spot! Also great for business meetings. They have great specials on appetizers and drinks, which can easily become a meal. I also love that their offer half sized salads. The spinach and fruit salad is AMAZING! Not overly fruity and the perfect vinaigrette to top it off. That with a glass of wine for under $10?! Three of us went to a Rise Against show in Feb. It started out with us walking to the Myth from a nearby hotel, I think it was at least 20 below. We stood in line for at least an hour waiting to get, which is fine, I can handle that. Once we got in, got our drinks and looked around, we saw that the majority of the people that were in the crowd were ages 15 to maybe 18, which made me feel a little uncomfortable about drinking because I tend to get out of control at these events, but that still didn’t stop me from having a few. We watched the other bands that opened for Rise, they weren’t bad, but when Rise came on, I dragged my friend down into the mosh pit, everything was going fine until I looked back at my friend and her face was covered in bl00d. Some dude knocked her in the nose, giving her a black eye and messing up her nose pretty bad. We crowd surfed to the front to get her to security, who then took her to a back room. I tried to follow, but the chick wouldn’. I have fun at the lounge. They have 3 rooms with different music in each which is nice because it’s kind of like bar hopping without going outside. I have always found the staff to be friendly and I enjoy the fact that most of the people who are there are not the drunken college students doing 21 shots on their birthday type. The only negative aspect is that a number of times I have been there and it was really dead. With three separate rooms, they really need to pack the place to make it feel full and sometimes the attendance is just pitiful. I had fun regardless but, would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t have that sad “I threw a party and no one showed up” feel. Also, I went on one night when they advertised having belly dancers. I belly dance myself so I thought this would be really cool. However, it ended up being your standard gogo dancers wearing their bras and some kind of long fabric skirt thingy– not even a proper belly dance costume let alone dance! Seriously, thes. As far as fourteen-year-old Jolly knows, she's the last polliwog still alive -- and this special talent makes her invaluable to the pirate captain who raised her. When someone sets a trap for Jolly's ship, she alone escapes. Washed up on a tiny island, she meets Munk, who has been raised in hiding. Munk longs to go to sea, but his parents are afraid of pirates. They have forbidden Munk to reveal his true identity -- he, too, is a polliwog. But pirates are not the only threat in the Caribbean. Evil forces are stirring, and a demon from the sea attacks and murders Munk's parents. Was the demon really after Munk? And Jolly, too? Why are the polliwogs so valuable, and who's willing to kill to possess them? Jolly and Munk must sail with a strange crew of outcasts, led by the mysterious Ghost Trader, to avenge their loved ones and try to stop an ancient, malevolent force known as the Maelstrom. It's hard to describe, but I feel more like being told a story than experiencing the story together with the characters. These characters, especially the main cast, just don't seem to stand out in any way to me. They lack distinct voices and anything to make me care for them. They're just overall nice people, but don't have much of an individual character. As a matter of fact, my favorite character in this book was an eccentric woodworm! Everybody is also talking exactly the same way. The pirates sound the same as the third person narrator, teenagers the same as adults. All of them at times use completely old-fashioned words or expressions, that simply sound artificial to me (I can somehow accept the narrator sounding like my great-grandfather, but a pirate girl really shouldn't talk in a more refined way than everyday teenagers). There is not much to criticize concerning the actual story. It's a decent fantasy adventure book. Very much written for a young audience. I probably would have loved these books as a child or even teenager, too bad I was born too early. A definite recommendation for young readers. Older readers should get it from the library first. Especially if you like fantasy with pirates, this is for you. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a short read and had a great sense of humour. I actually wanted to read this book because it has pirates in it. A simple reason, but I absolutely love the way how pirates are portrayed in books and I also found the story revolving around kids that can walk on water to be very intriguing. The book started in the middle of the action so it wasn't boring at all. The world-building was also done really well. The characters were also really interesting. There was definitely a lot of character development happening. When Munk first finds Jolly, she gets to know him as a friendly and happy boy, but then I was kind of shocked at the turn his personality took towards the end of the book. I thought that Jolly was a cool character because she is a girl pirate and that aspect was captured really well. I liked that she knew a lot about sea battles. My favourite character was by far the pirate Captain Walker. His humour was subtle and wry, which I really liked. Even though he is actually a side-character, he still has a really complex personality. Walker is the typical ruthless pirate and yet the more Jolly gets to know him, there seems to be more to him than that. Another thing I didn't really expect to see in this kind of book would be the love triangle. I'm not entirely sure. Anyways, now that I think about it, I should have predicted it and Jolly's kind of coldish reaction to it. Overall, the book did capture my attention, although I thought that the ending was kind of disappointing: the last chapter was boring to some extent. Nonetheless, the rest of the book made me want to keep on reading. I am looking forward to the next book! All young pirate fans, gather round. The two main characters, Jolly and Munk (both 14 years), are the last Polliwogs--people who can walk on water. This in itself is interesting enough to carry this novel from being on-the-bandwagon to unique. But thankfully, Meyer doesn't stop there. With the kobalins, ghost crews, the Acheron (+ flopping fish), and other water beasts, the creativity in this novel promises readers that the rest of the series will be just as wonderful and new. Another interesting aspect of this book is that it was originally written in German. This had no effect on the reading experience for me. I didn't even know it until I read the author's note at the end. It's my first translated book though, and I have nothing to compare it with, so I'll say that it was a good, clear read. As far as the rest of this series, I cannot say that I am going to read it. I don't doubt its brilliance, it's just that I specifically picked this young teen book up because the cool idea of a pirate-polliwog--I knew going into it that it would be too young for me. I was gladdened when I saw that it was exactly as I hoped it to be in the creative category. Alas, it was also exactly as I thought it would be in the reading-level category. Thus, while I shall not continue, I highly recommend it to younger teenagers. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, Pirates are not the only threat in the Caribbean. This book is really good and its hard to stop reading once you start. It should be for kids in middle school and high school. I believe the theme of this book is that no matter how hard things become and no matter how much people try to make you feel worthless, you should always look at the bright side of everything. You will always have someone that's there for you. Also when things get tough you should never give up on anything no matter how hard it becomes. She runs for her life, right into the middle of adventure. Munk is a smart boy who has been isolated from civilization for his entire life. His parents are scared for him - knowing that the pirates that roam the Caribbean would kill to possess a Polliwog - sure that he is last of his kind. But then Jolly floats into his life and he is thrust into a world he has never known. Torn from the saftey of his island home he sails on a Ghost Ship, manned by the Ghost Trader - a man who deals in others souls. Neither of the Polliwogs can unserstand how much they are needed if man-kind is to survive, for the Maelstrom is rising, gaining power and the Mare Tenebrosum is setting a doorway into the deep. The Ghost Trader rallies around himself people to stand against the darkness and the Polliwogs are high on his list. Originally published in Germany in 2002, the first volume in the Wave Walkers series is a fast-paced fantasy featuring plenty of action and suspense as well as colorful characters and vividly described settings. The appealing jacket art promises just what the book delivers: pirates, magic, and daring deeds galore. If this wasn't a book meant for children I would probably give it five stars. Just a bit too simple for me. I probably would have loved this book had I discovered it when I was 12 (or so).
